A historical association looks to the future
The association was founded in 1948 as exhibition management Haus der Kunst München e.V., by the members of the artist groups Münchener Secession e.V., Neue Gruppe e.V., Neue Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft e.V.
Up until the end of the 1980s, the association held all its exhibitions – some of them attracting international attention – at the Haus der Kunst München.
Following the founding of the Haus der Kunst München charitable foundation in 1992, the association focused on holding its annual major exhibition, the Grosse Kunstausstellung, at the Haus der Kunst.
Since 2013, the association has also held the Artists' Biennale at the Haus der Kunst, with a one-week event being held in the years inbetween the biennale.
While the Grosse Kunstausstellung has always been a comprehensive and wide-ranging exhibition, the Artists' Biennale and the events inbetween have focused on pieces of contemporary art carefully selected in accordance with strict criteria.
These ambitious exhibitions and events aim to promote contemporary German artists, to set their work alongside that of international artists and to bring them to a wider public.
In 2014, the association (formerly Ausstellungsleitung Grosse Kunstausstellung im Haus der Kunst München e.V.) adopted a new name and a new constitution.
The artists' association is a shareholder of the Stiftung Haus der Kunst München gemeinnützige Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. The co-partners include the Free State of Bavaria as main shareholder, as well as the Society of Friends of Haus der Kunst.
The association owns the historical archive of the Haus der Kunst and its prehistoric predecessor, the Glass Palace. The archive is made available to the Foundation by the Association, thereby supporting, among other things, the reappraisal of the history of the Haus der Kunst Munich.
The association is made up of ordinary members, advisory members and sponsor members. Membership of the association is open to any natural or juristic person who is willing to promote its aims. Only apprentice artists can become ordinary members. The adoption of ordinary and advisory members is decided by the members' AGM.
