Brigitte Kowanz‘ Arbeit „iPhone 09.01.2009“ stammt aus dem Jahr 2017. Die Arbeit ist für Kowanz’ Beitrag „infinity and beyond“ im Österreichischen Pavillon bei der 57. Biennale von Venedig entstanden. Ab 2015 entwickelte die Künstlerin die Werkgruppe der „Cables“. Fäden, Drähte, Kabel wurden im Entstehungsprozess der Arbeiten als duchamp’sches Zitat durch die Künstlerin in Kollaboration mit dem Zufall in ihre Form gebracht. Diese Form wurde digitalisiert und zur Grundlage der Neonlisene, die in ihrer Form wiederum an ein am Boden liegendes Kabel erinnert. Die Länge der Linie hingegen basiert auf einer Form von Codierung: das Datum der Vorstellung des ersten iPhones durch Steve Jobs (09.01.2009) wurde in Morse Codes übersetzt. Künstlerische Handschrift, Zufall und Codierung überlagen einander gegenseitig. Mit dem Morsecode setzte sich die Künstlerin bereits in den 1990er Jahren auseinander. Er ist ein früher binärer Code, der es erlaubte, Information mittels Lichtgeschwindigkeit zu übermitteln. Andere Arbeiten dieser Werkgruppe, setzten sich mit den Daten der Veröffentlichung des World Wide Web, Google, Wikipedia oder etwa Instagram auseinander. Während Rezipient*innen sich im realen Raum befinden, werden sie durch die Künstlerin in fiktive, virtuelle Reflexionsräume dirigiert.
Brigitte Kowanz studierte von 1975 bis 1980 an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst Wien. Ihre Arbeiten waren unter anderem bei der Venedig Biennale, der Sao Paulo Biennale, der Sydney Biennale, der Cairo Biennale, in der Fondation Beyeler, der Hayward Gallery London, im Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, im MACRO Museo d‘Arte Contemporanea di Roma, oder im Shanghai Art Museum zu sehen. Umfangreiche Einzelausstellungen der Künstlerin fanden im Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zürich, der Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck, der Secession Wien und Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Wien statt. Zudem entwickelte Kowanz weit über 50 Installationen für den Öffentlichen Raum.Von 1997 bis 2021 war sie Professorin an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien.

Brigitte Kowanz's work "iPhone 09.01.2009" dates from 2017. The work was created for Kowanz's contribution "infinity and beyond" in the Austrian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. Starting in 2015, the artist developed the work group "Cables. Threads, wires, cables were brought into their form as a Duchampian quotation by the artist in collaboration with chance in the process of creating the works. This form was digitized and became the basis of the neon line, which in its form again reminds of a cable lying on the ground. The length of the line, on the other hand, is based on a form of coding: the date of the presentation of the first iPhone by Steve Jobs (09.01.2009) was translated into Morse codes. It is an early binary code that allowed information to be transmitted at the speed of light. Other works in this group of works deal with the data of the publication of the World Wide Web, Google, Wikipedia or Instagram.
